OTHER DAREDEVILS: DAREDEVIL 2099

As far as I know, DD 2099 has only appeared in 2099 A.D. Genesis #1. While the DD character's story comprises almost half of that issue, he was never even "named", and I was left wanting to see a LOT more of this character. So, if you run across DD 2099 anywhere else, PLEASE let me know. Recently, I was fortunate enough to obtain a copy of a series proposal for DD 2099 that made its way onto the internet at one point and was saved by an individual kind enough to share it with me. And if you'd like to find out more about the 2099 universe in general (including LOTS of fan fiction), you should look up the 2099 Underground.

The Costume

As you can see from the picture, this DD wears an ebony black suit with haunting red glowing eyes showing through. The mask on this costume also covers the entire face; while this prevents the artists from showing us that incredibly strong chin that all super heroes seem to have, it does leave a little more mystery to who (or what) is behind the mask. I think this is by far the most intimidating DD costume yet. I think the problem with the black armored costume was that it wasn't simple or plain enough. Fans enjoy a very simple/basic DD.

The Billy Club

Well then, how do you modernize a simple stick, but keep it simple? Have it made out of energy a la Star Wars' light sabre. It seems as if this club "materializes" in DD's hand, and I'm not sure, but it seems that it can take on the proportions of a staff or a club. If DD 2099 does make any other appearances, I hope they don't try to let this club shoot rays or anything else like that. Remember, keep it simple! Although, I am a little curious as to how he will get around using this club...didn't seem to have any sort of "energy cable" to swing by.

The Man

So, exactly who IS in the costume? All the other 2099 heroes differ quite a bit from their present day counterparts, but DD 2099 has some striking similarities to ol' Matt Murdock. The moves (see both pictures) are very similar, although this DD appears to be right-handed. DD 2099 also explains to someone that he has "loved the law, and lived for the law". He also tells some bad guys that "13th street and beyond belongs to him now". Sounds an awful lot like current day DD staking out Hell's Kitchen.

Will we see DD 2099 again? I hope so. When this DD said he "loved and lived for the law", he also said he had found out that "the law could be bought". Sounds like a VERY good story and is no doubt tied in with the origin of DD 2099. Also, because of this, DD 2099 is a little more comfortable with breaking the law to preserve justice. I only hope we all have the chance to find out a little more about this mysterious character.

Sitemaster's note: since I originally wrote this, I've obtained a copy of the DD 2099 series proposal as I mentioned above. So, we actually do know a little more about the man in the costume. Check out the proposal if you want to know more as well.
