Even for Marvel, this one was a little bit of overkill: in the two years preceding this set, Marvel released Women of Marvel, Marvel Masterpieces (2007), Fantastic Four Archives, Marvel Masterpieces (2008), and Complete Avengers. Then Marvel Masterpieces III is released while MM '08 is still circulating! And all of these are sets with sketch cards. Flood and famine seems to be the cycle with these folks. Last flood was 10 years before (Ultra Spidey, Silver Age, Marvel Creators, Marvel Legends). Makes a collector wonder if it'll be 2019ish before the next flood of 3-5 sets of cards (and sketch cards) comes out. Sketch cards were probably included 1 per 36 packs (or 1 sketch card per box) again. I haven't been able to find an "official" site (Upper Deck published this set) for Marvel Masterpieces III yet to confirm that number. The set did still include the Artist Proof Cards from the other Masterpieces sets. Some of the Artist Proof Cards have been turning into really amazing bits of art as the artists have decided to really go to town on them and treat them like a commission. In fact, some artists were selling their Proof Cards as commissions. Many of the artists from previous year's sketch cards have returned, but there were some newcomers as well. Next to the names below, I've also included the reported (from many sketch card web sites) numbers of sketch cards done by that artist when I've been able to find that information. The best site I've found for this type of info, as well as a lot of other info and discussion about this set (and other sets), is the Scoundrel Art Community. This link here takes you to a page with some of the latest updates on artists for this set and how many cards they did. |
