TOP 10 DD TEAM-UPS

I once again drew on Bill, Kuljit & Jack to help me with an informative & entertaining top 10 list. Below the table with our top ten fav. team-ups, you'll see some comments from each of us regarding our choices as well as some others that we also love that just didn't quite make it into the top ten. Some interesting notes on this one: DD is essentially a loner, but teams up surprisingly well with a BROAD range of Marvel characters -- from the cosmic level right down to the street level. I think that made this an interesting list to work on. The real surprise, however, was that no one picked Stick or any of the Chaste. While this was one of DD's most interesting storylines, and highly acclaimed by just about everyone, I think DD & the Chaste always seemed to be working "on the same side" but in different corners of the ring so to speak. It never really seemed to be a "team"-up.

  Bill's Picks Kuljit's Picks Jack's Picks Kevin's Picks
1 Spider-Man Black Widow Black Widow Spider-Man
2 Iron Man Two-Gun Kid Foggy Nelson Black Widow
3 Paladin Spider-Man Capt. America Foggy Nelson

5 Fantastic Four Deadpool Spider-Man Gladiator
6 Black Panther Capt. America Black Panther Nick Fury
7 Dr. Strange Inhumans Nick Fury Paladin
8 Defenders Defenders Elektra Defenders
9 Ka-Zar Gladiator Silver Sable Punisher
10 Wolverine Wolverine Two-Gun Kid Dr. Strange

Bill's Comments

1. Spider-Man - for some reason they just click. In the early years, it was the rivalry (Matt thinking of Peter as a kid, see DD 16), later years the friendship they built up as each helped the other out of major jams.

2. Iron Man - this only happened once but they made a surprisingly good duo. Plus, Iron Man is probably my No. 2 favorite Marvel character.

3. Paladin - again, hasn't happened in years but they seem to mesh despite being quite different.

4. Capt. America

5. Fantastic Four - DD team ups with the FF, for some reason, seemed to have caught Kirby's imagination... FF 39-40 and 73 were among his best on that title. Byrne utilized DD a couple of times during FF stories in the early '80s, with DD's super senses providing a key clue to the "Malice" storyline.

6. Black Panther - T'Challa became the first hero to learn Matt's secret identity. The two worked extremely well together in DD 52, 69, 98 and Avengers 82.

7. Dr. Strange

8. Defenders - Who'll ever forget that fateful coin flip? ;-)

9. Ka-zar - particularly back in 12-14 and 24.

10. Wolverine - They get on each other's neves and can be fun to watch.

Kuljit's Comments

Kuljit, who does have his own DD page to manage, sadly didn't have time to include any comments with this particular top ten list. I'm hoping when he has time he can send me some, and I'll insert them in.

Jack's Comments

Yep...definitely a hard list to do. I got the first ones out quickly...8-) Okay here it is....

1. Black Widow: Natasha was born to be be with Matt. These two go naturally together. Natasha understands Matt and vice versa. Whenever one of them are in trouble...they are there for each other.

2. Foggy Nelson: What? He's not a hero? What do you mean picking him? I look at Foggy and the different times that he and Matt slugged out legal documents to win a case. These guys are the legal eagles of their time. Seperately they are good, but together watch out!

3. Capt. America: Captain America and DD...These two just have that something "special". They both want the same thing, but approach it from two different angles. Two men that believe strongly in thier beliefs approaching each other. Great dialogue and action whenever these two get together.

4. The Avengers: I can't leave this out. Why? Because I love it everytime when they ask him to join, and they get that famous answer "NO". DD is one of those classic heros that can guest star with a team, but should never join a team.

5. Spider-Man: I never liked Spiderman that much...but they work well together. Many people say that DD is a spidey ripoff...but these show that he isn't. DD is a hero unto his own.

6. Black Panther: Another character that DD resembles, but is totally different. We've always seen these two working together, but toward the end of the series we do see the relationship straining a little.

7. Nick Fury: These two have had memoriable moments together. SHIELD has played a somewhat major role in the DD series so they can't be left out.

8. Elektra: Frank Miller eat your heart out! I haven't seen these two written so well together than in the past few years. Their original teamup was nice, but it didn't place them high on my list. Only recently with DD and Elektra bantering with each other about different motives, do we see a little of the bantering of DD and BW in it.

9. Silver Sable: What can I say? They are both great alone, and together we see the friction, but they get the job done.

10. Two-Gun Kid: Only one teamup with him, but it was one of my favorite issues, so I can't pass up ol' Two Gun on this list.

Honorable Mentions:
and now for the honorable mentions: Shanna...the only other woman to have an Icon/Logo with DD on the cover.
Hawkeye and the Thing...always for a good laugh.
Paladin...when the money called he was always there.
Nomad, Wolverine, Punisher, and Ghost Rider...they appeared randomly throughout the series, but most of the time I didn't like the stories. It's a personal call.

This was a harder list to do, because when I think of teamups, the only one in the series that jumps to my mind is the DD/BW years. These two were made for each other.

Well Kevin, hope this does it. Now where's the top 5-10 supporting cast members list. 8-)

editor's note: I left this last comment in that Jack sent me just to show that I was forced to bug the Frightful Four Fans for yet ANOTHER list! Seems like every time I get something done, something ELSE pops up! Sheesh!

Kevin's Comments

1. Spider-Man While Natasha & DD may have a slight edge as far as flow and ability "together" go, for entertainment value DD & Spidey just can't be beat. The writers & artists seem to pull something extra out of the hat every time these two get together.

2. Black Widow There are NO two heroes that move together like these two. Poetry in motion. They can get in & out of places that nobody else could without even anyone knowing. They're both incredibly athletic & amazingly graceful. These two always give the artist a chance to show off a beautiful visual ballet.

3. Foggy Nelson I must admit, on this one I was influenced by reading one of the other picks. I'd forgotten Foggy as a possible team-up, but as Jack said, the two of these guys together make a formidable legal team. However, Jack did forget that Foggy has helped DD out many a time outside the courtroom! He's distracted bad guys, taken blows, knocked guns out of hands, etc. While he may be know Falcon or Bucky, ol' Fogster has chipped in far more than his fair share of times.

4. The Thing The types of stories that these two get into probably couldn't be more different. The Thing has super strength & usually deals with cosmic bad guys. They both have similar backgrounds, however. They both come from rough neighborhoods, they're both pugilists (not just "fighter"s, but real boxers) from way back, and both are very intelligent & resourceful. I'm only sorry that the Thing has spent more time in his team-ups with Matt moping and whining. The few times he lightens up, they're like old poker buddies and extremely entertaining.

5. Gladiator One of my very favorite DD villains. I love the respect & friendship that has developed between these two characters over the years.

6. Nick Fury As Bill said about Wolverine: these two get on each other's nerves & can be fun to watch. :) I think DD often sees Fury as a "Kingpin" for the "good guys". Nick (& SHIELD) tend to manipulate people & situations to achieve overall results & often have very little consideration for the individuals involved. Of course, DD deals with the world one individual at a time. In contrast, I think DD is usually a thorn in Fury's side as he's one of the few people that Nick has little or no control over.

7. Paladin Probably as much as any other hero, I'd love to see these two get together again. There seemed to be SO much potential there, but they haven't teamed-up again in MANY years.

8. Defenders I always preferred these guys to the Avengers for DD team-ups.

9. Punisher As with Fury, the Punisher is enjoyable because of the tension created. It would probably be better to say a "contrast" rather than a "team-up" when DD & the Punisher get together. It provides the perfect opportunity to show that the Punisher's strong-arm tactics are TOO violent, yet DD's method of putting someone in jail only to have them kill someone again doesn't seem the ideal solution either...

10. Dr. Strange DD is one of the few "regular" (as opposed to mystical) superheroes that Strange has called on over the years. I think Matt's mental abilities, his willpower and personality better enable him to deal with some of the things Strange encounters than some other heroes. The two also seem to have a good deal of mutual respect, and I suspect there are some REALLY good Strange/DD stories out there waiting to be written to explore the relationship of these two very deep individuals.
