WOMEN OF DAREDEVIL

Editor's note: this page is an unfinished work; I will be adding pics as well as some more info as soon as I can. I appreciate your patience with these "works in progress". Please check back from time to time to see how things turn out. I'd also like to thank Loren Freid for his tremendous help in this section. He's been contributing ideas & info all along, and continues to do so as this section develops.

One of the Daredevil title's strongest assets is its supporting cast. Due to some exceptional writing and character development over the years, the cast of Daredevil has become a group of people that the readers feel they really know: old friends, old flames, annoying acquaintances, etc. As a reader, it's impossible to consider Daredevil's supporting cast (and occasional guest appearances) without considering the women who have weaved in and out of Daredevil's life. In fact, many a fan has noted over the years that Matt Murdock gives even playboy millionaire Tony Stark a good run for his money as far as the "eligible bachelor" with his various relationships. The following is an attempt to introduce the visitor to this site to some of the women who have influenced and been influenced by Matt Murdock/Daredevil over the years. The women are listed alphabetically within each category, and some women are listed in more than one category. You can click on the category or an individual's name to jump directly to that entry.

The Secretaries

From the very first issue, the secretaries have played an important role in the life of Daredevil as well as lawyer Matt Murdock & his partner Foggy Nelson. Some secretaries have also been love interests, and some have just strengthened an already strong supporting cast.

Thumbnail: Karen Page Page, Karen
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #1
Hired: Daredevil #1 by Foggy as secretary for Nelson & Murdock
Typing: ? wpm; Dictation & shorthand: ? ; Gets coffee: ? ;
Left firm: Daredevil #?; Circumstances: to pursue career in acting; relationship problems with Matt
Karen was Matt & Foggy's very first secretary hired by Foggy as the two lawyers were just opening their practice. Karen almost immediately fell in love with Matt. And, of course, Foggy fell in love with Karen. Amidst much soap opera, she appeared to be a reasonably competent secretary, and kept things running fairly smoothly. As she & Matt had more & more problems in the relationship department, and after Karen's father died, she decided to move to the west coast and pursue a career in acting. Karen came in & out of Matt's life several times after leaving for the west coast, but as a friend and/or lover, not as a secretary.

Thumbnail: Becky Blake Blake, Becky
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #155
Hired: Daredevil #155 by Matt as secretary for Storefront Legal Clinic
Typing: ? wpm; Dictation & shorthand: ? ; Gets coffee: ? ;
Left firm: Daredevil #?; Circumstances:
Becky Blake joined Nelson & Murdock at a turbulent time while Foggy & Matt were running the free clinic. While their initial meeting was more of a confrontation (Becky accused an overtired Matt of not wanting to hire her because she was handicapped), they became friends & later it became apparent that Becky had feelings for Matt. She never told Matt though as she felt she couldn't compete with Heather Glenn, the Black Widow, and all the other women that seemed to come in & out of Matt's life. Like Karen, she appears to have been a very competent secretary.

Thumbnail: Maxine Lavender Lavender, Maxine
First met Matt/Daredevil: ?
Learned DD's secret identity: unaware of Matt/DD's dual identity
Relationship history: professional; friends? (or at least allies) with DD
Current relationship status: unknown, presumed friends/allies

Thumbnail: Kathy Malper Malper, Kathy
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #299 (DD tries to bring her incriminating material on Kingpin)
Learned DD's secret identity: Malper deals with both Murdock & DD but is unaware of the dual identity
Relationship history: professional; friends? (or at least allies) with DD
Current relationship status: friends/allies
Kathy Malper first runs into DD in her own office when he tries to bring her incriminating evidence on the Kingpin. Malper is the Federal District Attorney for the Manhattan District who constantly wears a Red Sox baseball cap and jacket. She also has pictures & posters in her office of Red Sox players. She initially shuns him, not liking costumed vigilantes, but agrees to look over the info after DD saves her from a booby-trapped briefcase. After looking over the evidence, she agrees to help clean up DD's "friend" Matt Murdock's record from the Kingpin's smear job. She clears Matt's license in issue #300 and even helps get some office space for Matt to use with Foggy in the World Wide Plaza.

One very puzzling item occurs in issue #367. A "Ms. Malpher" (Malper?), the mayor's liason to the organized crime task force, is investigating WFSK's radio station. This woman is wearing a NY Yankees hat. Even more surprising than her change in career, and the fact that she has middle-length brunette hair rather than red hair with a bob, is her change to the Yankees from the BoSox. One would have to assume that this must be a different person as such a complete personality change would indicate irreparable psychological damage under any other circumstances.

Friends, Allies & Relatives

From the very first issue, the secretaries have played an important role in the life of Daredevil as well as lawyer Matt Murdock & his partner Foggy Nelson. Some secretaries have also been love interests, and some have just strengthened an already strong supporting cast.

Thumbnail: Sister Maggie Murdock, Grace (Sister Maggie)
Real Name: Grace Murdock
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #229 (as Sister Maggie)
Learned DD's secret identity:
Relationship history: mother; friend
Current relationship status: friends; while she has still not explicitly said that she is Matt's mother, she admitted knowing Matt's father
While she has still not explicitly admitted to being Matt's mother, her lack of denial and willingness to talk about Matt's father as of the early issues of volume 2 point to a tacit admittal. It was originally suspected she was Matt's mother when Miller had her heartbeat "jump" as she denied being Matt's mother in issue #230. {More information yet to be added}

The "Real" Women of Daredevil

While I mentioned above that many of the women who've appeared in Daredevil over the years have made DD what he is today, these women are some of the folks that REALLY made DD what he is today.

Thumbnail: Ann Nocenti Nocenti, Ann
Real Name: Ann Nocenti
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #236 - set DD up with the Widow to bring in a rogue agent
Learned DD's secret identity: Daredevil #236 - never explained; seems like Ann always knew DD's identity
Relationship history: working relationship
Current relationship status: friends?
It's difficult to imagine someone being able to put Matt Murdock/Daredevil's ideals & ethics through hell as he is one of the more ethical & moral characters in the Marvel Universe - but Nocenti did just that. She then put his love life through hell. And to top it all off, she put him through hell - literally.

Thumbnail: Christie Scheele Scheele, Christie
Real Name: Christie Scheele
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #196 - was involved in teaming Wolverine up with DD to keep Dark Wind from taking Bullseye to Japan
Learned DD's secret identity: Daredevil #196 - Christie seems to have known DD's identity from the beginning
Relationship history: working relationship
Current relationship status: friends?
Although Matt/DD is blind, Christie repeatedly tried to add a lot of color to Matt's life -- something Matt probably could never fully appreciate.

Thumbnail: Marie Severin Severin, Marie
Real Name: Marie Severin
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #61 - had DD attacked by the Trio of Doom (Cobra, Hyde, Jester)
Learned DD's secret identity: Daredevil #61 - never explained, Marie seems to have always know his identity
Relationship history: working relationship
Current relationship status: friends?
During 1970 & '71, Marie was responsible for putting DD into a number of situations, most of them rather volatile. While I don't think anyone's been able to prove that she had a grudge against DD/Matt Murdock, these circumstances seemed to arise with a certain inevitable regularity due to their working relationship. In her defense, Gene Colan (who also worked with DD/Matt for many years) stated that Marie Severin is the sweetest person he has ever known in comics. She's outgoing, warm and funny as can be. She treats her peers and fans with humor and respect.

Love Interests

Thumbnail: Elektra Natchios, Elektra
Real Name: Elektra Natchios
First met Matt/Daredevil: Daredevil #168 (flashback: met Matt at Columbia)
Learned DD's secret identity: Daredevil #168
Relationship history: friends; lovers; enemies; friends/allies
Current relationship status: killed in #181 (or wary allies - depending on which fans you talk to)
Status of father: killed DD #168 (in a flashback to Elektra & Matt's college days) while Matt was trying to rescue him & Elektra from some terrorists
Elektra appealed to Matt in a big way when he met her. She was the first person he let know about his extraordinary abilities. She lived on the edge: drove too fast, did crazy stunts, etc. Something about all this appealed to Matt very much. He fell head over heals for her. Foggy didn't like her too much however. After they'd had a very steamy yet relatively short romance, Elektra's father was killed by accident while Matt & Elektra were fighting some terrorists who had kidnapped Elektra & her father. Elektra left shortly after that, and Matt didn't see her again until years later.

She came back on the scene as an assassin. At one point, she spares Foggy Nelson's life when he recognizes her as "Matt's old girlfriend from college". She also protects Matt a number of times, and eventually she & DD both team up against the Hand. After defeating the Hand, Elektra finally dies at the hands of Bullseye. Later, when the hand tries to resurrect her, Matt cleanses her, and Stone, a member of the Chaste (the sworn enemies of the Hand), carries her off. Since that time Matt has run into her a number of times, but their relationship seems to have settled into that of allies & old friends.
